Lavender Lemonade Recipe

| Lavender Lemonade – a taste of summer |

The summer heat is on and one of my kid’s favourite summer drinks is Lavender Lemonade. I must admit, when my mom suggested making lavender lemonade, I was pretty sceptical. I wasn’t sure how it would taste. Would it be too florally or too sweet? The flavours, would they be overwhelming? And last, would I ACTUALLY be able to drink it?

When looking out in my backyard, with all the lavender plants I had, I knew I had to do something with it all, after all there were only so many lavender sachets that I could make.

I took my mom’s suggestion to the internet and Pinterest for some inspiration. What I discovered was that some of the recipes called for a simple syrup, some called for freshly squeezed lemons and some called for both. Freshly squeezed lemons are not very practical for me, as living in Canada, lemons are available but they aren’t always inexpensive. I wanted something very simple and a recipe that didn’t require multiple steps.

I couldn’t quite find the perfect recipe, so I created my own. This recipe is not too sweet and the subtle flavours of the lavender and lemon blend well for a refreshing drink over ice.

Simple Lavender Lemonade Recipe

1.5 cups of fresh lavender flowers or ½ cup of dried lavender flowers
1 cup of sugar
2 cups of boiling water

Instructions:

  • Place the lavender flowers in a bowl and add 1 cup of sugar. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the lavender and sugar mixture and steep for 15 minutes.
  • In your juice container place 1 cup of lemon juice and 7 cups of cold water.
  • When done steeping, pour the mixture through a clean coffee filter or a very fine sieve. Discard the lavender.
  • Add the lavender infusion. May add additional sugar to taste.
  • Pour over a glass of ice and garnish with a sprig of lavender, mint or a slice of lemon.

What is great about this recipe is that the sweetness, lavender or lemon flavours are not overwhelming and easily adjustable after it is made.
Want it sweeter or tarter? Add a spoonful of sugar or lemon juice to your drink.

Looking to fancy the recipe up?
Muddle some blackberries in the bottom of your glass, fill it with ice and pour the lavender lemonade over the ice and blackberry mixture.

This recipe is also very easy to adjust after it is made, just add a spoonful of lemon juice or sugar into your drink if you want it sweeter or tarter.
