Nature Therapy for Empty Nesters: Rediscovering Self and Well-being

As an empty nester mom, I have felt a range of emotions as my children moved away to go to university. I am so thankful that they still come back in the summer as it has made the transition so much easier. This transitional period is challenging, but I have tried to find the silver lining to look at it as a time for self-discovery and growth. One of the best places I have found to reconnect with myself is when I spend time in nature.

Studies have shown that spending two hours a week in nature can be good for your health and well-being. Here are a few reasons why connecting with nature has helped me and could benefit us empty-nesting moms.

Reduces stress and anxiety

The empty nest phase of life can be stressful and overwhelming, with feelings of uncertainty and loss. Spending time in nature can help to reduce stress and anxiety, as it provides a peaceful and calming environment. The sounds, smells, and sights of nature have helped to ground me and have promoted relaxation, allowing me to let go of the worries of everyday life.

Provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment

Raising children is a fulfilling and meaningful experience, but when they leave the nest, it can be challenging to find a new sense of purpose. Who else has felt this?!? I can remember thinking at one time, “If only I didn’t have to drive them to another practice,” and now I am wishing I could! Engaging in outdoor activities, such as hiking or gardening, has helped to provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Setting small goals such as a 30-minute walk or weeding, and achieving them provides a sense of fulfilment.

Promotes physical health

I have spent so much time prioritizing my children’s physical health that mine often got put on a back bench. As I am getting older, I realize how essential it is to prioritize my physical health. Spending time in nature can be an excellent way to engage in physical activity, such as hiking, walking, or swimming. Since engaging in regular exercise, I have not only dropped a few pounds, but I am also working to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve my cardiovascular health, and increase my mobility and flexibility.

Nature Therapy

Fosters creativity and inspiration

Nature has a way of inspiring creativity and providing new perspectives. By immersing myself in nature, I have tapped into my creative inner self and found inspiration for photography. I just use my iphone, but I always love to stop and take some photos from a new perspective. If photography isn’t for you, maybe try journalling in a quiet spot!

Provides an opportunity for social connection

The empty nest phase of life can also be a time of isolation and loneliness. Engaging in outdoor activities, such as group hikes or gardening clubs, can provide an opportunity for social connection and support. Meeting like-minded individuals who share your love of nature can help to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

At the end of the day, as an empty nester mom, connecting with nature has been a tool for supporting my mental well-being and rediscovering myself during this transitional period. I still have a long way to go, but I am slowly finding my sense of purpose again. Whether it’s spending time hiking in the mountains, gardening in your backyard, or taking a stroll through a local park, nature can provide a sense of peace, purpose, and inspiration.

So, put on your hiking boots or gardening gloves and start exploring the natural world – your mental well-being will thank you!
